Nancy developed into the ducal seat of the duchy of lorraine, a position it held until the duchy was annexed by france under king louis xv in 1766 and replaced by a province, with nancy maintained as capital. Nestling in the côtes de moselle, in a valley surrounded by hills, it is located a few kilometres from the confluence points of the moselle and meurthe rivers. Until the 18th century nancy was composed of two distinct fortified towns.
